//// On awkwardness

I’m really happy about my recent wardrobe cleanup spree, there were few real gems lying in there, really deserving to be taken out to daylight.
These Ulrika Sandström pants are delightfully awkwardly shaped, the waist opens like a giant calla flower, it is gathered from the hip with a fabric belt and the crotch hangs daringly low — at least from harem-pant-hating style police viewpoint (never mind of those, I says). This is by no means to be mixed to your regular paperbag waist with kind nature — no, there is pretty wild amount of material on the hip area and absolutely no way to arrange it in flattering way.
When I found these pants I knew that I want to try them first with my old suede boots with sharp toe. Those together had such an eighties vibe going on that I decided instantly go for some sort of grown up version of early-Madonna-esque style, so I picked up a H&M striped shirt, pumped up the awkwardness factor by wearing a flesh colored slightly ill fitting boned bustier over, and toned the whole thing down a bit with the old Filippa-K blazer with classic and slightly mannish lines. The crucifix jewelry was intentionally left out from this outfit but I spent couple of minutes more in front of the mirror than usual and used my black gel liner for some cat eye…
I think that when there is not too much flesh on display, you can get off with relatively quirky combinations. No-one asked me if I had misunderstood something (like the concept of underwear).

unbelievable, i got the same idea some days ago about the corset underwear and also in nude colour.
on top of black though. i know its too rough for a Finnish Mini Xmas party but that was the 1st outfit idea that came to my mind and i even found a suitable bustier from Topshop
. anyway, great outfit, pants are fantastic, would never look good on me though but on you — 10 points, colour doubles the chic.

i can’t believe how feminine (in a good way) this looks. i’d even say dainty. the bustier works really well with those pants.
you know i would never have considered a lot of the pant shapes you show but i’m starting to change my mind. you make them look great.

You are so great at layering! I love that bustier over top.

This outfit is really nicely put together! I love how you combined the corset with the stripe top, very fresh.
All my pointy toed shoes are still hidden away somewhere in my closet, somehow I feel like it’s too early to bring them back. Yours work nicely with this outfit though!:)

I am beginning to REALLY like your dressing up philosophy!

Love love LOVE everyhting about it — nude mesh works so well with stripes, and the gray, and the structured jacket! Most of my good pointy shoes are long gone, but maybe I could “visit” my mum’s shoe closet…

Lisa, are you sure that it would not go for xmasparty? These went to Hakaniemi post office, S-market and lunch with absolutely no trouble.
Michele, I try to be as open as possible for everything, but for some reason it is easiest for me with shapes, they engage me in very satisfying way. A new shape forces me to think in a new way like nothing else.
Ulrika, thanks! That bustier over a fitting t kind of surprised me too with it’s workability, might even try to adopt the thing in wider use. I like lace, but I have too few ways to actually inject it to my outfits. Sweet romantic or dark gothic solutions just don’t suit me (or I just haven’t figured out the way to work around those).
Anna-Maria, thanks! The truth is that I have too few really distinct shoes… …but this autumn I realized that during this march of clumpy shapes and heavy platforms this (actually quite basic) shape can be distinct. The only challenge is just to combine it so that the outfit looks fresh, not just dated.
May, you just gave me an idea to somehow put that “philosophy” to words, thanks!
sugar kane, just thanks!

Yeah, I actually live in Hakaniemi! And yes… …it is not unusual to meet me in UFF or Hämeentie Fida. Soppakeittiö is super!

I just left a comment on chictopia but i had to do it again … the pictures really did justification in a bigger format — now i got to see all the details, proportions and contrast .… Kamicah, i don’t know if you realized — i am totally loving your style — something i relate to completely: the sense of quirkiness that were not supposed to make sense yet it just did … i called it the origin of the original, haha! btw: i shared the link to this look on UnoCosa’s fan page

Uno Cosa: thanks, you are such a darling! My pics could sure be better, the camera is ages old and I could arrange things so that I would not need to take photos through mirror.

i came over from UnoCosa’s fb post. genius combination. the cover-up with the underwear over is brilliant, unlike the combinations we often see that are just in our face.
the mix of neutrals and black is also very well done! awkward? not at all, just not plastic or stereotypical. i’ll be stalking your posts my dear (:
