// Vampire charm

Got e-mail yesterday from Bittersweets, they make some neat jewelry from solid gold and silver. I like especially the vampire teeth bent to heavy ring, lovely dainty feather ring with chain and dagger necklace. But there are some severed fingers, earthworms, maggots… — and extremely beautiful lightweight, extra long pearl necklaces that can be worn in multitude of ways. Their blog is quite helpful to give a good view of those pieces in actual use.
So, dear Santa…

PS. Used to hate all vampire stuff before True Blood… …but those southern rednecks and snaggle tooths with cheesy switch-on sound have turned my head. Who knew.

To be honest, I’m not much of a product girl when it comes to cosmetics. And I hate cosmetics advertising, moronic with all that pseudo-science. F**k, I feel my blood pressure rising when just thinking of it. Sorry, guys… …but this is such an issue to me that I try to select brands that do not advertise at all for skin and hair care — both product types guilty for worst sci-fi-ence babble and empty promises as an essence of their marketing strategy.
My daily makeup is really light, a quick whiff of mineral makeup base, some mineral bronzer and/or blush, mascara, brow color and lip balm, probably dabbed lightly with lipstick. Perhaps some gel liner, if I rather procrastinate than leave home…
But I like painted, short nails. Usually bright or dark. For nude look I opt for bare nails instead of painted — duh, what’s the point of painting them if you barely see the result. Bright or dark nails act as an accessory, methinks.

ManGlaze makes some awesome but very affordable, matte but shimmering nail polish; good enough for Gareth Pugh show! Love the package design with Joe Simko graphics — and their swift customer service kicks ass.
They have only two colors currently, black and gray. But isn’t that all a man… …er… girl needs? Got them on the last summer and they have been my favorite since. Recently they added bit pricier matte topcoats to their selection, a plain and shimmery one. Haven’t tested them yet, but they promise to take the crappy gloss away from any polish… …well that’s the kind of marketing promise I’m able to swallow.

This is my happy neon Color Club family. CC is my second favorite brand, cheap, awesome quality and great color palette from classic to unconventional.

Essie is better known for very ladylike colors, but they also have great brights. In their holiday colors they have a promising mint green, too…

Nivea is available here in every supermarket. They don’t have a wide color selection but I love the jellylike finish of these brights. Rimmel is another great supermarket brand for polishes, they have one awesomely tacky eighties teal green with tons of shimmer.

Green… …I love it! OPI has a great and very affordable alternative to Chanel Jade (color name Hey Get in Lime, how lame, this even isn’t lime) — well not that affordable in Finland but I suggest ordering online. Misa does great and cheap polishes, this darker, tealish green is Dirty Sexy Money.

For my classic moments (mwahahaha!) I opt for Chanel Rouge Noir or Rescue Beauty Lounge Glamourpuss.

My manglazed nails, ain’t they fuggen ugly?

// Well cinched

Oh my! I’m completely blewn off my feet about these fabulous artistic creations of Eiric Aswan. Dark and beautiful, incredibly detailed, astonishing… …most designs have material options like leather, rubber, vinyl. If the dark look is too much for you, think for example these waist cinchers in tan leather. Be sure to check the shop, these are not the only beauties from there!

I’m putting up a savings campaign for these… …awesome… …awesome… …*mumbling*…

// Bootie beauties (and the sidekick)
Posted on | November 28, 2009 | No Comments

I have promised myself to step out the black shoe rut. And to be honest, maroon and purple options start to look very good to my eye. These booties are from Yoox, by Dsquared2 and Diesel. Either ones would do. Or both of them!

Velvet looks so sumptuous right now! I could accommodate my toes to these Castañer wedges for the holiday season.

Dr Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb has one of my favorite starting title typography on top of a scene of gentle art of the on-air kerosene filling.

So do you think that the fact I love that type would make it right to order this t-shirt from Your Eyes Lie?

// Cocoon like
Posted on | November 27, 2009 | 2 Comments

I have been in a terrible flu — and today was the first day within over a week I went out little bit further than getting some necessary groceries from the market across the street. It felt good to put some decent stuff on, and I probably got bit dressier than usual. Nah, not really!
Almost all stuff is pretty familiar, but this illustrates quite well one thing I do quite often. I like to pile on similar garments, it creates nice rhythm to outfits. It can be scarves, shirts… …this time it was cocoon like shapes in a form of oversized t-shirt dress, oversized shrug and vintage stole. The whole thing also matched perfectly to my mood — bit touchy-feely, but on the other hand very happy to get stronger an healthier again!
Babooshka boutique maxi shirt, second hand leather skirt (it is actually in the middle of little hemming project but the raw hem miced pretty well with ripped nylons), A.F. Vandeforst shrug, second hand stole, bracelet from H&M, Rützou wedges.
And sorry, I was too lazy for tripod — again…

// Osklen detected
Posted on | November 26, 2009 | 7 Comments
From Scandinavia to Brazil!
I recently found out a brand that made me very curious. It is “Brazilian Moncler”, Osklen. Leading man behind the brand is former doctor and mountain climber Oskar Metsavaht, who has no formal fashion education. (I have to say that his name makes me think more Estonia than Brazil.) Like at Moncler, Osklen’s roots are also in sportswear. That might sound boring… …but in the best cases this promotes wearability without compromising the design. And it looks like Osklen achieves exactly that.

The summer 2010 collection is pretty awesome, I’m especially drawn to diaphanous layers that make a weird optical illusion, I feel a strong urge to grab those dinosaur shaped 3D glasses with red and blue lens and see how these would look through them… …the multicolored, layered garments are amazingly rich and serene at the same time, and I also enjoy Oskar’s unusual take on lace. I’ll bet that I would find bagfuls of wearable separates from Osklen, but I’m also afraid that these are priced like Moncler…
The current winter collection is worth a look, too. There is such an effortless take on draping jersey, that my eyes feel soothed after looking it through.

// Marimekko spring — I love it!
Posted on | November 25, 2009 | 8 Comments
For my delight our national pride in the field of fashion and design — Marimekko — seems to improve all the time. The great thing is that they employ young designers to freshen up both their print design and clothing lines. Right now I’m extremely happy about the following things.
Rinne & Niinikoski has designed some great clothing for next spring! See these beautifully constructed black and white numbers, can I has one?

Even the striped designs are quite fetching:

Samu-Jussi Koski does good job this spring especially with oversized jackets, t-shirts and knits — and adapting the classic “Unikko” print to very wearable chiffon dress:

Another thing is that — TADAA — Julia “Finsk” Lundsten has apparently designed some shoes for Marimekko. Judging from the images they seem to be slightly toned down in terms of height and shape from the most courageous Lundsten designs, but those sandals with ruffle detailing on front look interesting enough. Unfortunately I did not find a detail image of those, but here’s another pair for a taste:

For the first time I noticed to be interested in Marimekko bags, too. I mean their canvas bags are perfectly practical and well designed, you can definitely face a bunch of Finnish architects or designers sporting one — but they don’t actually create fashion waves…
This printed clutch would be a fabulous addition to many outfits:

Just cant pick the color…
All images from Marimekko, thanks for Claudia and Petra for making me aware of these good spring news!

// Vintage how-to — understanding materials
Posted on | November 24, 2009 | 21 Comments
I’m planning on posting a series about how to take care of vintage garments. The subsequent posts will be shorter and more easy to digest, but I wanted to include the fabric basics to this one post. So enjoy — or suffer, this first one really is a lengthy one!
One quite common problem with vintage clothing is identifying the materials. Wash tags might have been removed, or the piece is hand sewn and they never existed. Vintage boutique keepers usually have a good educated guess about the materials, so don’t forget to ask. But you can develop you own skills in this as well. Read more
