//// The tiny pleats
Posted on | November 5, 2009 | 11 Comments

Oh, these dark and dreadful mornings really suck the life out of me. Tried to wear something light and uplifting; DIY cashmere-silk knit cardigan with crocheted edges, 2or+ viscose jersey tunic with pleated front, micro pleated silk-polyester mix skirt Dior (vintage), Norwegian Wood mesh leggings (oh how I love the asymmetricity of the pattern in these), Rützou wedges (Finsk neutral/bright mix would be appreciated here). Tried to find couple of neclaces, but was not able, so this had to do it. And the shiny skirt kind of does the job of jewelry…

Your choices of colour and texture here make me very happy! It reflects the quietly beauiful, frozen colours outside, j’adore November when it looks like this!

the skirt is really really nice, i would be interested to see it in other combinations. where did you get that one? leggings are totally adorable, i love the pattern too. did you really knit that bolero yourself??

you look really sweet yet strong at the same time, does that make sense?
love all the pleats and details. i have a soft spot for knits and pleats.

Ihania sävyjä!

sugar kane, yes, I’m all about reflectiviness, I’m very responsive to my surroundings — and inner landscape… …clothes really are extensions of my moods.
Lisa, you certainly will see it here again! That one is from Etsy — a great place to buy vintage online. And bolero really is my own work, I used Wenlan Chia’s pattern for this. If you are at least a bit interested in knitting and fashion you should check her patterns out. There are not too many knit pattern designers who inspire me but she does.
Kurarin, thanks, that makes sense — and was really nicely put! I love knits and pleats too, texture, texture!
Anna, eikös värit olekin ihania!

Oot kaunis! Ihanan seesteinen kuva. Mä myös rakastan neuloksia ja hiuslaskoksia

you truly have the skills to combine texture and color. i love how the pleats resonate with the pattern of the leggings…

i am really interesting in knitting, in fact it is my new year 2010 promise. so, where should i start?

Susanna: haha, ainakin olen hyvä hämäämään kauniilla vaatteilla! Mutta kokonaisuuksiahan ihmiset näkevät, olisi jotenkin hassua jättää hiuslaskosten ja pehmeänrouheiden neulospintojen edut hyödyntämättä… …ihanat vaatteet parantavat elämän laatua.
Stellagee, it is so fun that you say so, that was one culmination point for me for this outfit.
The weird thing here is that I collect my clothes almost against all advice. I actually don’t think much if the new piece fits in by any means — my decisions are based on infatuation and money, solely =). But still there are lots of clothes that seem to belong together.
Lisa, do you know the basics, like how to knit, purl, cast on and cast off? These are best learned with someone who can knit, the second best option is to watch some great video material from Internet. Knittinghelp is an excellent source: http://www.knittinghelp.com/
But after that you should pick your first real project — and I recommend that you select something that you really want to do. It does not matter if it introduces some new techniques if they are explained well. If you like this cardigan you should definitely check out Wenlan Chia’s knitting books. He uses chunky weight yarns so the projects are not too daunting for a beginner and the techniques are relatively basic too — plus the books explain the techniques quite well! (side note: the first book contains quite a lot errors so don’t forget to check the publishers errata before you start a project.)
The books are introduced here: http://twinklebywenlan.com/yarnandbooks.html
When you get to more advanced level and want to develop your “knitting thinking” I recommend anything from Elizabeth Zimmermann. Not for patterns (although she has many classic and really clever ones that are easily adaptable to current time) but exactly for that “knitting thinking” development.
