Yesterday I went shopping with my dear old friend (I bought just some elastic band — so not much about the actual catches here)… …and we decided to pay a visit to Marimekko — I have been very excited about the Julia Lundsten collaboration and new Rinne Niinikoski designs.
For my disappointment I found out that those geometric dresses did not make it to the production. They had just few sample items with one size — and for some reason the contrasting color was not white but baby pink. I almost cried… …for me these Rinne Niinikoski designs were the first sign to actually put Marimekko back to my fashion radar. Although Samu Jussi Koski had done some good work on refreshing the brands clothing line they did not really hit my nerve. But these certainly did. They said that these clothes did not have the commercial potential. I’m saying that Marimekko is seriously lacking the courage to explore the new — the essence that actually got the brand started.

Not in production. From this there was not even a sample. The dress was disassembled to a separate skirt and jacket — and especially in the jacket the ordinary front buttoning just did not look right (concealed ones or even a zipper would have looked better with these geometric lines) — it looked like a very hasty attempt to get this to more “commercial” form or whatever. I still tried the jacket on and the shape was great for my body type.
Not even all Julia Lundsten models seen in fashion shows did make it to the production. Unfortunately they had discarded two high heel models — a beautiful origami front sandal seen in upper pics on the model and very useful looking wedge sandal. But fortunately they had this:
I was not crazy about it from the pictures, but in real life it looks so good! And the best news — it is extremely comfortable for that height.

Missä Marimekon liikkeessä kävit? Voisin itse käydä kurkistamassa, josko vaaleanpunaisen sävy olisi oikea.

Molemmissa Espan liikkeissä oli mallikappaletta koossa M. Vaaleanpunaista oli käytetty myös Rinne Niinkosken neuleissa — ja olisin linkittänyt kuvan esikatselua varten, mutta eihän niitä kuvia tuolla Marimekon sivuilla tietenkään ole.

Hmm, Marimekon koko M on yleensä mulle aivan liian suuri, mutta käynpä kuitenkin tarkistamassa. Kiitoksia!

Ompas harmi ettei kivoja juttuja ole uskallettu ottaa tuotantoon asti. Mitä hinta luokkaa nuo Julia Lundstenin kengät muuten olivat?

Matalat kengät olivat muistaakseni alle kahtasataa, tuo korkokenkä taisi olla joko 279 € tai 299 €.

Well bollocks to marimekko for chickening out! I saw the same dress, and the quite hideous jacket+skirt earlier, what GIVES with the pink??? A terrible terrible shade at that.
I love those shoes, but for that kind of money I think I’ll pass (or wait for the sales).

Olin kanssa hirveän pettynyt siitä, etteivät nuo Rinne-Niinikoski –luomukset päätyneet tuotantoon. Ja sinäpä sen sanoit: rohkeus on jotakin josta Marimekko perinteisesti on ollut tunnettu. Sama rohkea, kokeilunhaluinen linja saisi jatkua yhäkin! Kyllä mäkin toki tiedän, etteivät nuo vaatteet olisi massojen mieleen, mutta eihän niitä suuria määriä tarvitsisikaan valmistaa. Pienet sarjat riittäisivät mainiosti, ja lisäisivät samalla Marimekon design-uskottavuutta.
Rinne-Niinikoskesta vielä se, että olen tosi innoissani seurannut heidän työskentelyään MM:n leivissä. Talven neulemallisto oli IHANA, mulla on siitä näyttävä neuletakki, neulehousut ja erilaisia asusteita. Rakastan niitä kaikkia!

No, I did not get those sandals — almost 300 euros is too much for me right now. But I’m definitely stalking them!
I did not like that particular shade of pink, either. Can’t really get why they chose to make the samples with that. White is so much more coherent to the designs — and black and white is pretty sure choice for Scandinavian customers.
Enpä paljon enempää voisi olla samaa mieltä. Jos haluaa uudenlaisia asiakkaita, on tehtävä uudenlaisia tuotteita. Tykkäsin itsekin Rinne Niinikosken neuleista, etenkin talven mustavalkoiset ja itse asiassa myös kevään geometriset mustaa, pinkkiä, valkoista ja turkoosia sekoittelevat olivat houkuttelevia. Villaleggingsit olisi pitänyt ehdottomasti ostaa talven kokoelmasta… …tai joku iso tunika/villatakki.

One more nail on the Marimekko coffin. I thought they were really onto something with this collection, but then no. What bothers me most about Marimekko right now are the mixed signals they’re sending with their paper ads, web ads, website and fashion shows. That brand identity is l.o.s.t.
Still, I still love the classic Mari patterns: stripes, dots, contrasts.

kokonaan missannu nämä tuotokset ja tod harmi ettei mennyt tuotantoon vaikka vaan pieninä sarjoina kuten joku jo sanoi.

Niinpä. Ei taida olla Suomessa helppoa suunnittelijan elämä (taidat tosin tietää asiasta paremmin kuin minä
), vaikka vähän saisikin jalkaa isompien talojen ovenrakoon. Kuulin vähän aikaa sitten, että Aino Vainio duunasi Patricialle uimapukuja (ja ehkä alusvaatteitakin)… …eivät menneet tuotantoon nekään 
Olisipa vähän enemmän tuota rohkeutta kotimaisilla valmistajilla. Ja paljon jaksamista nuorille suunnittelijoille!
