//// The double denim

Posted on | March 26, 2010 | 12 Comments

So, one phenomena that amuses me a lot is those definite no no’s of all sorts of style quides. You don’t have to be very aware of trends or fashion to be aware of those… …Carrie says no to scrunchies… …Trinny & Susannah say this and that… …Oprah says… …oh, you got it… And then BAM — the style disaster turns to a trend — and the most unexpected people are BREAKING THE STYLE RULES *wheezzz, the air goes in*. And suddenly everybody is doing it. Like yours truly.

But truth to be told I have never been thinking that one can’t wear for example double denim. I think that I get the reasoning behind the style rulebooks in this case — double denim can be extremely boring or it can be quite redneck’y. But both of these aspects could probably be worked to extremes to create something interesting (I would love to work the ultimate boringness of denim if my own appearance were bit edgier). Or it could be possible just to think why it could be boring or what exactly are the hillybilly elements of double denim looks — and try to avoid those instead of avoiding the whole concept.

So this is not the answer for double denim looks, no! It is just my workaround that does not involve denim cutouts… …the elements are different shades of denim, unusual shapes combined to classics and few simple accessories.

I built the look around a lovely denim jumpsuit I found from Lindex. Lindex is little bit like Scandinavian Primark — affordable, totally safe bet to go shopping with your working class mom (if you happen to have one); she will love it and she can afford a bunch of momsy basics — but there are often gems in there (they even had some collaborations) — and those are probably not as worn-to-death-by-all-(Swedish)-style-bloggers than all the H&M highlights… Ok, the jumpsuit has totally unapologetic harem cut. I combined it to vintage men’s denim shirt. I love all sorts of processed denim, but nothing beats the feel of it when it has actually worn in use. The cuff and the pockets are bit torn — but they just add the flair of this piece. Over the shirt I’m wearing the old Filippa-K blazer, booties are from Vagabond, the sequined silk scarf Day Birger & Mikkelsen and the sunnies Pilgrim. When I bought these few years ago they were like HUGE, now when I look at them they look very considerately sized…

Oh the jumpsuit only… …this one I’m going to wear to pieces…

Kiitos inspiraatiosta!

I totally agree with you about the rules of dressing-up, they should be forgotten! About a year ago someone complained to me when I paired a lose top and a loose bottom, the person said if your top is loose, the bottom should be tight to remain the perfect balance. Well, here we go, a few seasons later and what do we get on the runway? All over loose and relaxed silhouette. ;)

Lindex is great by the way! I met Ewa Larsson yesterday and I can already tell you that you will love her latest Affordable Luxury spring collection! It will be out in May. ;)

Mää kanssa inspiroiduin kauheesti tästä! Denim denimillä on musta yleensäkin tosi jees (tietyillä tavoin totetutettuna, siis).

I know you have written that you don’t consider yourself to be stylish, but I think you have amazing style — all of your outfits look interesting, cool and coherently you.

    Kiitos, tytöt :-D !

Tavallaanhan tyylisäännöt ja niiden rikkominen tuovat pukeutumiseen hassua keinotekoista jännitettä — ehkä ne ovatkin olemassa viihdearvon vuoksi!

    Thank you wulan!

Anna-Maria — I have noticed that specific comment type, especially in Finnish style blogs. It can be quite deflating… …but on the other hand I don’t believe that everyone has the ability just to look things and see how they are, then the rules might be a decent starting point.

I think that Apparellel said something that people either are born with ability to combine stuff in interesting ways — or then not. I’m not all sure if the thing is innate — but with style I think that training the eye definitely makes more sense than leaning to a set of rules. And when training the eye the real challenge is to somehow get over the image of self, and worries like “do I look fat in this”, “what do the people think about this” — those things have very little to do with style — and they definitely block the creativity of dressing.

Oh, new Ewa Larsson collection! Can’t wait! I relly liked the dresses and knits of the previous one.

GlamaRuth — thank you! Maybe I just have problems with these style rules? I know that I am capable to creating visually interesting things (wit other thins at least, maybe even with clothes)… …but I guess that my point about style is that I can’t take it granted that “visually interesting” equals “stylish”!

Blogisi on ehdottomasti Suomen paras tyyliblogi. Olet mielenkiintoinen ja persoonallinen pukeutuja.

Ohhoh, lensinpäs pyrstölleni kommentista — hyvä ettei ollut kissa alla :-D . Kiitos, olen kovin otettu!

i really don’t like the fact that i have missed so many of your outfit posts. but it sure makes for some fun reading and looking now! i absolutely love this jumpsuit! it looks absolutely stunning on you. and the way you paired it with the chambray shirt and the blazer is perfect.

i do think we are born with more of an eye for combining pieces, and an eye for good style. but training the eye is definitely possible. all in all as you said i think it’s about throwing that stupid ‘style rule book’ out the window, and having confidence. you see it every day. people trying too hard and the people that have effortless style. you my dear, have effortless style. i am definitely going to check out that blog you told me about as i am so interested in the finnish style. i’ve been on a creative kick, which is so refreshing for me. now if i just knew how to sew better. aargh.

    hope you are well!
