// Demure lengths

Posted on | May 17, 2011 | No Comments

A nude pleaty thing found it’s way to my wardrobe. I cut the lining out — I’m rather wearing it with separate slip or half slip (you can sort of see it in the pictures) when the top layers don’t provide the coverage I’m comfortable with. Nothing too ballerina-esque with this for my body type, here I’m wearing it with Weekday shirt, H&M shrunken cardigan and Carin Wester clumpy shoes. The skirt is from Lindex — and I was there just to pick a few pair of undies…

I’m kind of loving this demure length, it is so easy to wear and it agrees nicely with my proportions.

// Girls who smell like old churches

Posted on | May 14, 2011 | 1 Comment

For me scents and perfumes are very, very important. I don’t wear just one scent — but I don’t have huge perfume wardrobe either. I tend to keep few, carefully picked scents — the selection is slowly evolving and different scents evoke memories from the different stages of my life. The editing decisions are based purely to love, I have to absolutely fall in love with a scent to add it in to my scent wardrobe. I need some variety for different moods and occasions, but often I just wear one certain scent for weeks or months, and then change to another. Well, maybe the time of year affects to what I want to wear, for winter I rather pick cozy, sensual and close-to-skin amber with warm spicy notes, at summertime I usually drift towards green, aromatic scents.

So I’m definitely not a fruity floral gal, but I have to say that I was slightly surprised to fall head over heels to this old church smell, Comme des Garçons Incense Avignon. The opening is a massive, panoramic olfactory view over an old catholic church (just can’t be thinking of St. Peter’s in Vatican, having just been there) — the incense, the cool, moist minerals of old stone building, ancient wood. The scent is so evocative, so real that I bet that people grown in catholic culture might find it even too… …representing — but for me… …well, my few visits in places like that don’t really emotionally wire to anything — and I can enjoy the pure beauty of it.

But the scent is not just about this trippy realness of the opening — it starts to evolve instantly to something more wearable: a beautiful arrangement of woody and aromatic notes around incredibly smoky incense note with hint of spices. I get some earthy patchouli, hint of vanilla, myrrh, cedar, maybe some other woods. The overall impression is dry — as opposite of sweet — this scent definitely has somehow moist feel in it. It’s very dimensional, beautifully aromatic, sort of clean without being a bit soapy (should I say pure?), slightly mineral, deep without being heavy. Very calming without actually being cool at all. I can imagine wearing this both in summer and winter. It’s also my best bet on the question what would Madonna wear on Like a Prayer video… (Image via all about Madonna).

Bottom note: I also happen to be one of the girls who think that a color that would gloriously finish any retro kitchen appliance will also do an awesome manicure! This heavy double cream yellow is Nubar Yellow Primrose.

// Casual stripes

Posted on | May 11, 2011 | 2 Comments

Sorry about the downtime and other technical problems. I’ve had some bad luck lately — first the problems with the name service, and now the server just broke down… …good timing, though, I’ve had not too much time for this blog in past couple of weeks.

Duh, I wish that this Zara cotton silk shirt is not a straight-off-replica of something Jil Sander — cuz I did buy it. I have had really hard time keeping myself off from shopping all the jewel tones… …so rare in actual production and shop shelves, at least here in North (I have a theory that the adventurousness of buyers has inverse correlation to latitude).

But I did not do that color blocking thingy — just wanted to wear this first with my usual casual stuff, laid back, all loose, unflattering, comfy, lovely. Stripping the “nowness” off from these cheap high street stripes… …which goes well with my old All Saints grandpa-meets-harem (I’m not thinking what you are thinking…) pants, pair of Chucks and Margiela MM6 coated fabric bag. The vintage neck cuff probably does not make any sense to anyone except me… …but there it is.

// Red

Posted on | May 3, 2011 | No Comments

If there is one psychologically difficult color for me it’s definitely red. I love the energizing effect of it, but I have hard time figuring out how to wear such an attention screaming color.

However, seeing it currently literally everywhere I’m starting to warm up. I would like my red to be bright and fresh, perhaps slightly shifting to either coral or raspberry. For cautious approach to it I have been looking for bottoms, they would be easy enough to tame with my slouchy neutral tops. Oh… …the clothes shopping ban — well it was not for jeans and I could truly add a pair, my slightly shrunken frame has changed most from the bottom half and all too many jeans of mine just don’t fit anymore.

The pair above from Zara would have been perfect, especially the subtle coating looked really good in person — but they don’t fit. 38 is loose from the leg an thigh, 36 gives me awful muffin top (I’m very surprised about Zara bottom fit, their tops tend to be small, but bottoms are, well, generous — and definitely cut for very feminine shape. And yes, I have only skirts and tops from there…). Suggestions of anything 1) fresh bright red 2) tight or fitting 3) casual 4) cropped or foldable?

Yes, I’m a magpie. And I love heavy wrist stuff.

Crystal and rose gold colored metal cuff from Rome. Brandless and lovely!
