// Spring Necklush

Posted on | February 9, 2010 | 3 Comments

Necklush is a dangerously addictive accessory for a person, who loves scarves in all forms.

My initial reaction to it was that accessory like that is the easiest to DIY. True — if you happen to find the right materials. In Finland fabric retail is small business and selections are not that good. I managed to find only too bright tube jerseys (I don’t want any seams to the strands, detail like that can totally ruin a simple accessory like this) and heavy tube jerseys meant as ribbing for sweaters etc.. The heavy heathered one I bought — and guess what, the heavy jersey does not curl nicely. The thing looks like a pile of rag rug material on my neck. But if you find some lightweigh tube jersey in the color of your liking — it will probably work.

So I end up ordering one — and have absolutely no regrets! My ivory-gray piece is such an outfit uplifter that I truly consider some other color options as well. Black or deep gray for next winter — that’s a no brainer. And for the summer? These pale taupe Necklush strands would be perfect! In addition to their versatility as scarf the piece can be worn also as a squishy belt… …nice. Wouldn’t need tube jersey for these — but on the other hand the particular shade looks perfect!

Oh dear, please kill my Etsy account!

The gadget geek in me got a stroke when I saw this neat little home for my beloved iPhone. Do you se any wires or cords or stuff like that? Neither do I — they don’t exist. It amplifies the sound in quite old fashioned way…

Unfortunately there are no units of iVictrola on sale on Madecraft’s shop anymore…

// Second hand plan

Posted on | January 28, 2010 | 2 Comments

One thing I promised to do is to plan my second hand purchases. I prefer all sorts of full crammed murky charity shops to actual vintage shops… …and without a decent plan there is always a danger to end up getting out with piles of crap. Cheap, but still crap.

And then there is Etsy, my favorite online resource for second hand clothing.

These garments I could use right now.

Neatly faded, oversized denim shirt. Men’s maybe. Perhaps with subtle cowboy-esque details to separate it from all those generic ones. Would not mind few real tears & stains. Awesome jean pocket shirt from Vintagepimp.

Prints. In skirts, shirts, scarves or dresses. Natural fibers. Vintage fifties silk dress from Catseye Vintage, unfortunately too small for me.

Soft loose leather pants, black or brown. High waisted leather pants in Mad Max style from MadGirlVintage.

Metallic leather. Bronze leather skirt from Erstwhilevintage.

Eighties silk blouses and boxy tops. Bright colors would be rad! And pastels. Orange silk blouse from Vonlenska Vintage (love her shop).

// Seeing gold!

Posted on | January 14, 2010 | 4 Comments

China Glaze Chrome 2030 *oops its Khrome* nail polish. I’m in awe: this is just one coat, dries lightning fast — and I’ve never seen a finish like this in nail polish. The silvers are pretty rad, too.

I could wear this with…

// Vintage lace vibe emerging

Posted on | December 18, 2009 | 4 Comments

Lately I have been thinking about incorporating some vintage lace to some of my DIY projects. Considering the handwork involved the prices for antique lace pieces can be shamefully bargainous. My favorites from antique laces are different variations of needlepoint lace — that technique allows amazing freeform designs — and different variations of tape lace where simple (machine made or in the early versions handwoven) tape forms patterns that are connected with needlepoint techniques. The tape brings some dimensionality and structure for the lace, I really like the look. Both techniques allow very ornate designs, but the result is not necessarily particularly dainty. These lace types are also relatively durable. Antique lace can be easily dyed (they are usually made from cotton or silk, sometimes linen), but I would advise avoiding cutting it if you are not familiar with the lace type (and even then…). Purchase a piece that fits, or can be folded/ruffled to fit.

Two needlepoint examples, first from mmmoonchild, second from Deepwater.

Beautiful tape lace collar in excellent condition from mmmoonchild.

One thing I just can’t forgive myself is that I let this awesome tape lace bolero slip away from me. Although it is quite simple in lacework terms (not too much those time consuming connection stitches in between the tapes) the fact that the whole lace design is constructed to the actual patterns makes it truly stunning. If I don’t remember wrong the seller asked some ridiculous 70 dollars for it… …and look at its gorgeousness! How magnificent black layer would that be? What can we learn here: if you see a gorgeous vintage piece online in right size, buy it and cry for the credit later. It will pass and your credit will heal. This sorrow won’t.

And because there is no denying of my handcraft geekery, I’m embedding here an awesome little video from Kenmare Lace & Design Centre, charmingly enthusiastic Nora Finnegan tells something about the history of Kenmare lace and shows the basic needlepoint technique. There is a whole series of these, about needlepoint on netting, bobbin lace, tape lace… …if you are interested just follow the link to YouTube and watch them all.

Edit.

Edit. speaking of bargains, if you are vintage size four, meaning in this case that 32 inches is enough to go around your bust, go on and grab this amazing Dior jacket from Stock in Trade. The seller asks *sic* 22 dollars. I’m considering a new career as an eBay blood sucker.

// Longing for the long dress

Posted on | December 10, 2009 | 3 Comments

Can you explain why I feel suddenly a need for a long, casual dress? They haven’t been around in ages… …with ongoing search for couple of months I have come by these:

spaceodyssey

Art Lab Space Odyssey dress (thanks for Steff for pointing this out). I adore it — but I’m afraid that the bust construction is totally bad thing for my body type. I’m relatively free of body issues in that sense that I would be constantly bothered about them — but I would certainly like to shrink my chest to proportions that allow this kind of cut. Actually I would prefer my lady lumps almost nonexistent, thnx.

acnedress

This Acne pre-summer dress is actually truly amazing in person, the cut is quite clever making the stripes do some interesting zigs and zags in some strategic places and it is dyed beautifully, the dark shade is not even. But it is so stripy! I’m still considering it, but I definitely need block of solid black or white to calm it down a bit. Ah… …it was sold out from the online store already, so it might be too late. I stole the pic from Claudia (BTW check her blog out if you haven’t already!).

TAW

This simple T-shirt dress from T by Alexander Wang is probably my favorite. Hard to find online, though — and the bastards (sorry, I love ur stuff but not ur shipping policy) from Alexander Wang webshop don’t ship to Europe. What makes it even more bitter is that the dress is now absolute bargain with it’s $66 sale price. I may or may not have some plotz in my head on getting my sweaty paws on this baby…

// Well cinched

serpentlacy

Oh my! I’m completely blewn off my feet about these fabulous artistic creations of Eiric Aswan. Dark and beautiful, incredibly detailed, astonishing… …most designs have material options like leather, rubber, vinyl. If the dark look is too much for you, think for example these waist cinchers in tan leather. Be sure to check the shop, these are not the only beauties from there!

I’m putting up a savings campaign for these… …awesome… …awesome… …*mumbling*…
