I found this rabbit trapper hat (or Hrustsev hat… …eh) and a pair of almost unused English derby shoes from fabulous Kiliwatch.

// Black basics — and then some

Posted on | October 6, 2011 | 1 Comment

I would probably have ordered something from COS netstore already — if there weren’t a strange shortage in selection. I need a simple black dress that extends easily from daywear to evening. No jersey. No man made fibers.

I would prefer one with sleeves — but when I browsed through Swedish Stylein autumn collection I could not but just think if a hood could somehow compensate the demand of sleeves. Hmmm. Okay, they do have a nice option with sleeves as well, but there is something very special in that loose draped shape in lightweight silk georgette — with hood. With that sleeved one (available in black) — well, it’s nice and exactly what I thought — but nothing special.

The brand is still quite unknown to me, I stalked a pair of their black and white silk pants last summer, but end up the Topshop ones I found from sale. For my delight they seem to use nice materials, lots of silk and beautifully draping jerseys. The shapes are easy, the color palette gentle — a piece or two from this selection could be part of almost any wardrobe… …and they do have decent netstore!

The accessories collection had that little gem as well — a leather scarf. I guess that in their lookbook they had used it also on the waist, like a peplum, a belt worn over it. This would be a nice DIY idea as well, perfect way to reuse an old and ugly leather jacket in soft and relatively lightweight material.

// Headpiece

Posted on | July 29, 2011 | 3 Comments

I really could use headpieces more often. I’m afraid that my current habits include the wool beanie for the coldest days of the year — and occasional scarf wrapped to head — mainly to cover up the shortcomings in my hair routine. All those accessories that make me very conscious about them are very difficult to me — with hats I have to be careful with every stronger-than-just-a-breeze winds, for some reason I find it extremely difficult to find ones that actually stay put on my head… Anyway, I do like the bohemian flair of semi-haphazard turban wraps, with palazzo pants or maxi skirts, silk tops and some oxidized metal accessories the look is somehow decadent and timeless — not to mention how carefree the wrap is, I can trust it to stay on place.

Don’t remember where I got this nude-mauve’y-ochre’y ombre scarf, but it is old — and quite nice with those soft colors, crocheted edges and dye job, the mauve silk top is ancient MissSelfridges (lingerie?) one and the heavy silver beads I got last summer from Seppälä.

// Weighty details

Weekday accessory selection is not extensive — but I do love the accessory jewelry they make. Rose gold knuckle ring, matte rose gold double finger ring and antiqued silver necklace (huge and weighty), all from Weekday.

// Not your regular leatherware

Posted on | June 17, 2011 | 5 Comments

All these beautiful leather items are from Etsy seller Karen Kell. The pieces are folk and vintage inspired — but still manage to look fresh. These are not even the only gems I spotted in her extensive Etsy shop. I relly like the link structure she uses in both shoes and bags, combined to the hand tooled leather it somehow brings Rodarte to my mind. Gorgeous work!

Thank you for the hint, Minna!

// The brighter shade of shade

I absolutely want an inexpensive paper parasol for this summer. And I’m not speaking of a drink-sized one! Could there be any funnier accessory — not to mention the chemical-free sun protection…

// Summer accessories part one

Posted on | June 6, 2011 | No Comments

This spring I have been searching for an upper arm bangle from flea markets, Etsy and such with no luck. Fortunately I checked the neighborhood — not necessarily in the upper-arm-bangle-business — however I found that accessory label gTIE had moved the studio to the house next door. gTIE got started from Jenni Ahtiainen’s guest to find alternatives to traditional neckties. Today Jenni’s boutique designs and produces a wide range of accessories for men and women… …from necktie alternatives to jewelry and leather accessories.

gTIE accessories certainly have their roots in rock and punk culture, but I get some Scandinavian minimalism from Jenni’s designs as well. Many of her accessories are well adaptable to many styles. I was very drawn to a certain piece — a neck corset constructed from thin leather straps — but in the name of convenience (yes, the corset had just laces to attach it, with multiple tiny holes to lace into) and in fear of funny tan lines I bought this simple and beautiful arm chain. It fills the void of upper arm bangle, but is more comfortable to wear — and nicely upgrades those summery everyday outfits. With the arm chain I feel like I made an effort — even when wearing those denim cutoffs *yawn* and a t-shirt *ZZZZZZZZ*.

T-shirt is old Diesel one — I love this particular shade of purple and it goes so well with my coloring. Cutoffs, old as well… …H&M.

// Fascinated

Posted on | May 27, 2011 | No Comments

The burlesque wave is still going on pretty strong in this country, it can be easily seen in the blogs as well. That certain retro pin-up style is very popular. It is not for me — but I have to say that I like that some crafts have been revived, even in this small country — probably much because of this seemingly quite lasting trend.

Recently I went to press event with several interesting presenters, one of them professional hat maker Annina Nyberg-Saxberg. Her line is very classic, worthy of royal wedding — if you are in need of that level of formality.

Personally I really slack on wearing hats. I have three — plus some beanies — and I don’t really use them often. At summertime I like to use scarves as turbans, but that’s pretty much it. However… …a simple, sculptural fascinator might be fun to play with. It would add a bit of easy-to-carry volume to head and balance nicely some outfits. Hmm…
