// Counting on Filippa — but thinking about Miuccia
Posted on | May 2, 2010 | 7 Comments

For me the spring really starts when I can go out with bare legs. I’m not too sensitive to cold, but this spring my bare-legged sprints outside have been very short ones. However I have managed to pick up a coffee from our downstairs cafe wearing bare legs and Miuccia Prada silhouette. Why am I always thinking about her from simple outfits consisting full (printed and / or embellished) skirts, plain tops and flats? Conservative — yes, but also super comfortable.
AA sweatshirt (I need a sturdier and more close fitting sweatshirt with large neckhole), old Filippa-K printed and metal sequin embellished skirt, Pretty Ballerinas ponyskin printed flats, old metal bead choker as bracelet. Especially the back view reveals how short torso I have.
I have been unbelievably lazy with my hair lately — but I decided to improve my habits. Hair dresser on Monday, can’t really remember the previous time — maybe some three years ago when I decided to stop dyeing my hair

// Useless?
Posted on | April 20, 2010 | 12 Comments

I’m quite fascinated by this evil mutation of basic gray sweatshirt, the holes are not created all haphazardly but they form a weird, alienesque pattern — and the outfit is greatly affected by the layer underneath. It allows also varied states of skin exposure — which is actually a good thing at this time of year. But on adding some extra warmth… …it is almost useless…
The sweater is from Cheap Monday (Ann-Sofie Back in charge), American Apparel tube dress underneath. Norwegian Wood mesh leggings and COX booties. Sour expression… …again… …when do I learn to control my face in front of the camera…
She was quite happy to get some attention…

// Back and front
Posted on | April 16, 2010 | 6 Comments

As a design detail — or should I say undesign detail — I tend to loathe the undesigned back –phenomenon… …yes a suit vest can have a plain lining fabric back and printed T does not necessarily need anything to back… …I mean how — often in cheap and middle priced garments — the embellishments and details are all clustered to front with no attention to back view of the garment at all.
But still this outfit is a full-body realization of that — the back is very calm and conventional, the front is shred, printed and lightly layered. Wearing DIY shredded jeans (I’m still in awe of the leg elongating effect of these), second hand Escada jacket, Cheap Monday vest over American Apparel see-thru vest, Rützou wedges. Snaggle tooth inherited.

// Wearing the haori
Posted on | April 9, 2010 | 4 Comments

I have photographed just one actual outfit this week (bit busy week at work plus it has been so cloudy and dark) … but in addition to that I had to experiment a bit how I’m planning to implant the kimono stuff to my actual outfits. I really sought out another haori, a simple men’s style and in color that is totally lacking in my wardrobe: maroon. The maroon / ivory weave of this silk looks so exquisite, I really love it. I think I need third — a long one — made from softly draping silk, to be worn when lounging at home and maybe also as a dress…
I’m wearing the husband jeans ™ (old Acnes), Castañer wedges and an old Filippa-K vest with understated transparency detail, AA tube bra underneath. I also plan to layer the haoris with my old FCUK dark jean jacket, but I need to wash it once or twice to be sure that the color won’t bleed.
And I thought that it would be just fair to photograph the ratty Topshop bag — I have been carrying it with me almost every day for several years now and it has served so well. Truth is that I love it but our relationship kind of reminds me of an old marriage… …which is not necessarily a bad thing after all.
The red little monster peeking under the jacket is the tying cord, actually…

// DIY suede fringes
Posted on | April 5, 2010 | 10 Comments

So, one of my little easter holiday DIY:s was this suede fringe skirt. Originally it was really boring slightly A-lined skirt with length I don’t particularly like — but end up often buying because I have a large scar on my right knee. However this piece had been too long in my wardrobe, untouched. I decided either to do something for it (simple shortening was my first idea) or get rid of it. That Acne jacket changed my initial plans.
The DIY involved just some freehand rotary cutter use — and I shortened the lining so that the skirt is now actually a micro mini with long fringes. The only challenge was the slight A-lined shape, I had to adjust the width of the fringes just a tiny bit to get it right.
This can be worn in so many ways… …now I’m wearing it simply with bare legs, AA see-thru tank — which accidentally matches almost perfectly color wise to the thin knitted Vero Moda vest on top. The necklace is from H&M, shoes COX from Berlin and my old bone white Bayswater is pretty nice company for these (I usually don’t bother photographing bags, I use my ratty old Topshop bag or Luovi computer bag almost everyday — and I’m not that into bags anyway…).

// And science runs through us
Posted on | February 22, 2010 | 1 Comment

This is not an outfit post by any means, just snapped a quick one when I happened to wear one of my favorite T:s. This is American Apparel viscose shirt with black and white tie dye pattern. I adore it… …unlike many of the cheapie tie dye prints that have floated around in the tracks of the recent tie dye trend, this one looks like a real thing. Like someone had really, thoughtfully pulled the garment together with tight bands, soaked it in a dye to get this fabulous x-ray-like or alienesque symmetric pattern to it. I also like the loose fit, the drape of the viscose and the generous neck hole.
Moving to this one:

// Way sub zero
Posted on | January 27, 2010 | 7 Comments

Sorry about the sloppy posting lately, but I’m having some extra work going on — and that means automatically less time for blogging. My photoshoots are always quite light, I’m taking usually only 10 – 20 shoots per post, but then there is always the picking and editing process. Although I try to keep the editing quite minimum, there is always at least some resizing, cropping and color effects going on.
Ok, now i have material for two posts… …winterwear, pretty familiar items, layers, loose shapes, black & white, sloppiness, sensible shoes and mismatching nails. This time I included outerwear images as well, they are so integral to all outfits right now that I feel pretty stupid posting just what’s underneath them. It’s freezing here…
I’m wearing All Saints unfit pants (don’t know if I can exactly call these harem pants, they are like men’s trousers that have gone all wrong from the crotch area), Maison Martin Margiela knit, AA circle Scarf, Necklush, my old rubber band boots. And then I added my old Filippa-K coat, old long suede gloves from H&M, chunky knit beanie. The mint green polish is Essie Mint Candy Apple. Although I feel good in shapes and colors like these there is such an amount of seriousness going on that I need to disturb the whole thing even just a bit — this time by wearing tacky nail color.

// The ugly truth
Posted on | January 9, 2010 | 4 Comments

The ugly truth about my outfits right now is that I don’t care about much else than warmth. And snow eligibility. So lots of wool, layers, scarves, sensible shoes. And I’m completely in black & grey rut. Don’t care about pretty. That is so counterintuitive — a person should fight with color against all this darkness?
Comme des Garçons H&M jacket (I love the unexpected skin exposure of this, deeply), two AA tanks, DIY mitts, leather cuffs from some small accessory boutique, All Saints pants (love ‘em, too, they are unapologetically ugly shaped), Doc Martens, minimal makeup, undone hair. I like this kind of ill-fitting — fitting, twisted variations of a suit and very subtle tonal plays: all other garments are cool toned — but the sheer burnout tank leans to warm gray. I really dig that AA sheer material. Ok, it is bit static, but it is so soft and super stretchy, great fot tying and twisting. And although it pills, it does it somehow pretty.

// Space rags
Posted on | January 5, 2010 | 9 Comments
This is the type of outfit post I thought I will not be posting. I’m really not wearing it. However comfortable these bargain Topshop sale shoes are, I’m simply not able to walk on ice with heels. And they would definitely need socks if I could.

The pair was a total slip off from my shopping plan for London. I knew that my Castañer wedges were on their way and I can’t really say that I’m in desperate need for shoes. But I kind of fell for them, the sculptural heel design is pretty awesome and the foiled leather build with slightly alienesque design is just the right way tacky to really allure me. Plus the shoe is surprisingly comfortable, well balanced and the cage’y structure dense enough to not to dig into my skin. I have to confess that I often fall for pieces that are sort of leftovers. There were huge amount of these left in blue, green (kind of loved that, hard times to decide) and magenta, in all sizes. There were two other designs with this heel, too, an awesome thigh high boot — which I just could not justify to purchase, and a great, detailed ankle boot (see it on Queen Michelle, if you haven’t already). It might be the color — or the fact that these remind me very vaguely of the awesome McQueen Atlantis-collection — but this was the pair I walked out with.
Pewter colored foiled leggings from Vero Moda have not been too much in use, but suddenly they found a neat pair from the All Saints T-shirt dress in almost same shade. Under the dress is an old mesh dress/tunic, might be from American Apparel. I have mixed feelings towards it. To be fair it is not that bad on, but I hate the plasticky feeling when I pull this on, and the brittling sound of static. On the other hand it is a great underlayer. I draped my old A.F. Vandevorst giant shrug over the dress, this time I used another sleeve opening as a neck opening, so the symmetry was broken just a bit. A bit more drape over that, American Apparel circle scarf in delicate burnout fabric — I really like this piece but I believe I haven’t photographed it here yet. And Pilgrim crystal bracelet.
The result is quite monochromatic but not totally colorless and very subtly chameleon-like — the mauve tinge on dress and leggings is accentuated on some light. It is also a typical example of one thing I tend to do… If I have two shiny items, I like to have them close to each other… …in the same way the draped items are on top of each other. My outfits are usually not built around that many items and repeating a distinct item in very separate places creates easily a scattered, uncomposed effect. Or at least I think so. But this rule of thumb is not valid all the time…
Well, I sure will wear this later on the spring! Quite good for my sci-fi mood… …or space-hobo, whatever…

// Taking the DIY slashed one out
Posted on | October 2, 2009 | 6 Comments

I have been hesitating taking my DIY slashed T-shirt dress — aka poor girls Wang — out as a star of it’s own. I don’t do sexy dressing; and there is sex written all over the figure skimming nearly transparent American Apparel jersey. Slashing does not actually help. But one aim of this blog is to push myself out of my comfort zone, so I tried my best to tone the little devil down to wearable level with other tricks than using it as an underlayer.
I layered the dress over black American Apparel tube dress (this is one of the simplest and most useful garments I have) and H&M Divided Exclusive mesh leggings. My loved A.F. Vandevorst giant shrug camouflages the body contours quite nicely and adds volume. Huge disc necklace is from Pilgrim (I have heaps of disc jewelry, they kind of represent me an idea of an adornment, a detail with no details). I was not in the mood to add any black to this outfit anymore, so I let the Topshop wedges with wooden soles and bone white laquered leather offset the ensemble.
Excuse my dorky poses, I’m still very uncomfortable in front of the camera. But the visual feedback is very useful tool for wardrobe remixer, so I’m not giving up.
