////// The door in my wardrobe*

// With live preview

Posted on | July 27, 2011 | 1 Comment

I thought that live preview option on computer screen would make taking self-portraits easier… …but truth to be told I’m not convinced yet. Canon EOS Utility is buggy as hell and freezes in regular intervals. The live face detection mode is difficult to control, the software seems to lose the focus as easily as it gets it. And… …the remote does not work when in computer control mode. I have to examine this, there has to be a way around. Controlling the shoot with mouse and keyboard was not particularly fun.

Anyway, this is an attempt to shoot my summer dressing. We are experiencing such a great summer this year, high temperatures and sunny skies day after day. My already modest beauty routines are in complete state of forestation and I walk around in frizzy, curly hair (it frizzes and curls anyway in this hot and humid weather so why bother) and with minimal makeup.

Dressing is also simple, I’m wearing an old Diesel Black Gold jersey dress — it’s constructed from sheer knee length top layer with subtle wrinkle effect and shorter lining — and it looks surprisingly sharp for a jersey dress. I like to use clothes for sun protection (vs. iffy creams) and this lightweight Zara silk kimono is an excellent piece to throw over almost any summer ensemble. It works as a jacket and a blouse, it has button up front and a wide obi-style belt for further styling options. Considering I bought it in haste (do seagulls shit on people on purpose?) I’m liking it quite a bit! Horn necklace from Savage Salvage — and the body chain DIY.

// Autumn silk

Posted on | September 19, 2010 | 2 Comments

I’m piling on some giant t:s and knits, pretending that there is no need for a coat yet. I know that I have to give up soon. But while waiting that happen…

Gray tank AA, yellow one and the giant t from Weekday, DIY cashmere knit thingy, ancient H&M silk skirt, a pair of nameless mohair mix socks and Topshop wedges. I did not catcht the flu.

// Long skirt

Posted on | August 4, 2010 | 4 Comments

Okay, it’s been a while since I have last been able to cook up something that could pass as an outfit… …but I decided to break the blog silence because I finally found my old long jersey skirt from the depths of my wardrobe couple of weeks ago. I remembered it being good length and I was not wrong. I prefer wearing it with flats an light, flowy layers. The printed top is old Diesel one and the mesh… …thing… …I found from flea market, it has no tags at all so no clue about it’s origins. Wrist chainmail is DIY. Fabric bag and my old flats have been my trustworthy friends in this heat (continuing still).

// Just can’t get the grip of it

Posted on | June 8, 2010 | 8 Comments

I feel slight regrets of buying this dress from Berlin last autumn. I sort of like it, but it does not agree well with my wardrobe. I also thought that it is all too stripy to become really popular… …duh, was I wrong! I have seen it around a lot — which should not be a problem for high street advocate like me — but this piece is so recognizable…

On everyday use I think that it looks best on it’s own, paired just with casual flats and slouchy bag — but my body is not ideal for that. All additional layers strip off the effectiveness of this dress — except when they are theatrical enough.

I just toyed around with that dimension, wearing a vintage haori over the dress, adorned with my DIY body chain worn as giant lariat — I even attached couple of pendants to the ends. The other thing around my neck is an old glass beaded scarf, which actually falls closer to the jewelry category than scarves.

On the latter two pics: Vero Moda cascade knit and Design House Stockholm scarf create a weird court dress feeling.

But I’m probably not theatrical enough for these…

// Wear a suit day

Posted on | June 1, 2010 | 6 Comments

As a handful of internet geeks know — today is an international Wear a Suit Day. It is also Wear a Dress Day, but apparently I was in a suit mode.

Im wearing pretty familiar stuff, my suit is not actually a suit but Anette Görtz jacket paired to old pair of Filippa-K cigarrette pants. They are indeed a part of a suit, but I preferred the Charlie Chaplin-esque charm of this convertible jacket to the dry and clean lined Filippa-K jacket this time. The shirt is a customized H&M one, vest from American Apparel and shoes… …yeah, those Rützou wedges. And I changed to navy blue polka dot shirt before actually going out… …it just started to feel right for the day.

// On man-made fibers

Posted on | May 28, 2010 | 3 Comments

From my previous Lindex post one could get an impression of me as a terrible fiber snob — which is actually true. But I’m not all against man made fibers, they have their place… …in my leggings and tights, certain underwear and sportswear. I have also accepted one vintage polyester lace dress which is as comfortable as a shower curtain — and I bet that among my dressy dresses there are some other man-made miracles.

But to be totally honest — I have found a variety of polyester I actually like.

Modern, lightweight polyester jersey can look a lot like cotton, but it is slightly more drapey, lighter and does not crease at all. The jersey structure makes the fabric breathing, forget the shower curtain effect. The only negative is that it can be slightly static. My first encounter to this fabric was American Apparel see-thru garments, but actually I have two H&M tanks and this Asos asymmetric top with significantly better quality. Oh, the AA-ones are lovely, too — but they are so thin that they are extremely delicate and they also pill quite a lot.

I photographed the top with just my DIY body chain over it just to illustrate that there is no sign of the fact that I had a waist belt over it on previous day. But for the actual outfit I added linen Zara shirt jacket — the chains are too boob-enhancing without this cover-up-op. Selected Femme leather pants & Carin Wester wedges… …a simple work outfit.

(And I have not decided yet…)

// Old shreds

Posted on | May 11, 2010 | 8 Comments

I still like this T-shirt. It is one of the two I shredded in the end of last summer. It is such an item that it does not necessarily need that much accompaniment. The webby texture shows up nicely against the pale blue Cheap Monday jeans. I changed the Rützou wedges to DrMartens before going out — but actually the knee feels better in heels. Maybe I have permanently altered my physique for wearing heels…

Sorry, I forgot to change the auto focus mode… …all my front pics were focused everywhere else except on me…

// Back and front

Posted on | April 16, 2010 | 6 Comments

As a design detail — or should I say undesign detail — I tend to loathe the undesigned back –phenomenon… …yes a suit vest can have a plain lining fabric back and printed T does not necessarily need anything to back… …I mean how — often in cheap and middle priced garments — the embellishments and details are all clustered to front with no attention to back view of the garment at all.

But still this outfit is a full-body realization of that — the back is very calm and conventional, the front is shred, printed and lightly layered. Wearing DIY shredded jeans (I’m still in awe of the leg elongating effect of these), second hand Escada jacket, Cheap Monday vest over American Apparel see-thru vest, Rützou wedges. Snaggle tooth inherited.

// DIY suede fringes

Posted on | April 5, 2010 | 10 Comments

So, one of my little easter holiday DIY:s was this suede fringe skirt. Originally it was really boring slightly A-lined skirt with length I don’t particularly like — but end up often buying because I have a large scar on my right knee. However this piece had been too long in my wardrobe, untouched. I decided either to do something for it (simple shortening was my first idea) or get rid of it. That Acne jacket changed my initial plans.

The DIY involved just some freehand rotary cutter use — and I shortened the lining so that the skirt is now actually a micro mini with long fringes. The only challenge was the slight A-lined shape, I had to adjust the width of the fringes just a tiny bit to get it right.

This can be worn in so many ways… …now I’m wearing it simply with bare legs, AA see-thru tank — which accidentally matches almost perfectly color wise to the thin knitted Vero Moda vest on top. The necklace is from H&M, shoes COX from Berlin and my old bone white Bayswater is pretty nice company for these (I usually don’t bother photographing bags, I use my ratty old Topshop bag or Luovi computer bag almost everyday — and I’m not that into bags anyway…).

// Gathered with hooks and loops

blackflowr1blackflowr2blackflowr3blackflowr4

The truth is that I don’t have much style. My wardrobe is a haphazard collection of stuff I happen to love and that’s it. There is no great thought behind, no consistency, very few if any awesome “it” items — on the other hand I have very little restrictions except my tendency to avoid anything too revealing. I have some habits, though, like quirkifying outfits somehow, layering, repeating same detail or item several times, picking a focal point and piling stuff there, costumeish elements or arrangements, childish background stories for outfits… but actually I’m pretty consistent only with my hair. It has been for years now from medium length to long, and almost always gathered up somehow. I just wish that it would be remotely parisian chic in a nonchalant, not-too-done way… …but I’m afraid that usually it resembles more a birds nest; or is just plain boring.

blackflower5blackflower6blackflower7

With relaxed face me and my sister look like… …some angry bitches. That’s a family treat, but fortunately does not tell much how we actually are. No wonder I try often to balance with some cuteness in my outfits, even when wearing full black.

Today it’s my eBayed Docs, H&M tights (I’m in awe with these), my Christmas pressie for myself: Jolier One as a pant (looks like skirt, tho’), DIY silk chiffon skirt/dress, AA long sleeved T and Comme des Garçons for H&M wool jacket. No jewelry, but my nails are silvered!

And my new EOS 500d with remote kicks ass! I’m slowly getting a grip of it. These self portraits will probably never be particularly breathtaking, but at least you are able to see the details of the outfits.
