// Denim à la Alber

I’m liking this second round of Acne — Lanvin collaboration quite a lot… …any of those garments presented above would be warmly welcome to my wardrobe, especially that gorgeous top. There is that effortless and very chic draping so quintessential to Elbaz — and it’s working well with lightweight denim — plus those beautiful embellishments combined to simple, casual shapes. Unfortunately the prices are unreachable for me. Oh well. (< learning the vocabulary…)

// Stitched and padded
Posted on | March 8, 2010 | 4 Comments

I desperately need some padded and stitched leather to my wardrobe. I might go raiding the charity shops in hope of some motorcycling wear that could be reworked.
Gareth Pugh went sort of to the extremes with those details — I would love to see how this effect is actually achieved… …and I would definitely love to combine that rigid texture like this — to rough, austere garments with organic or maybe just heavily recycled feel. The leather textures in Haider Ackermann had rather similar look, but effect was quite different, the shapes of beautifully stitched leather reminded me of dead petals.
Space hobo… …mmm

// The space suit
Posted on | March 4, 2010 | 5 Comments

To be totally honest the Balenciaga strong shoulder statement jackets did not move me too much. But give me a space suit and I’m going bananas! Actually I would be happy with the space jacket, only. I would wear it with my most severe pulled back hair and stare to the moon all night.
I try to avoid these pure Style.com –posts, I mean nothing new in these pics… …but this just looked so fresh and struck right to my geeky nerve…

// Diesel Black Gold
Posted on | February 17, 2010 | 2 Comments

I was really eager to see what would Sophia Kokosalaki do in charge of Diesel Black Gold label. I’m not too surprised — and I would have loved to see more Sophia in it… …but on the other hand there were few fresh looking styling ideas to borrow. Like sheer black layers combined to denim, two very similar splash prints with different scale used next to each other and lovely cognac colored leather paired to black boots and cool toned neutrals… I need some cognac colored leather in my life.

// Like feathers?
Posted on | December 7, 2009 | 4 Comments
I’ve been following Dusturbance after the collaboration project with Queen Michelle — and BTW they made it to the final in Iconique. Congrats, girls!
Right now you can find Resort 2012 (!) mini-collection from the site, inspired by dead birds — and damn it is beautiful. Susie already presented the printed dress in StyleBubble, but here are the two other pieces of the collection. The light layers of fabric indeed arrange like the feather coat of a bird, living or dead…

There are many things that make me particularly interested in Dusturbance designs. I’m kind of tired the seasonal tyranny of fashion, plus I really don’t thing that creativity actually bursts in regular intervals. Dusturbance publishes the work when there is something to present. You can ask the prices and delivery via e-mail. I also love the fact that many Dusturbance things are designed so that they can be worn in several ways or altered somehow… …Michelle’s dress being the extreme example of this.

// Osklen detected
Posted on | November 26, 2009 | 7 Comments
From Scandinavia to Brazil!
I recently found out a brand that made me very curious. It is “Brazilian Moncler”, Osklen. Leading man behind the brand is former doctor and mountain climber Oskar Metsavaht, who has no formal fashion education. (I have to say that his name makes me think more Estonia than Brazil.) Like at Moncler, Osklen’s roots are also in sportswear. That might sound boring… …but in the best cases this promotes wearability without compromising the design. And it looks like Osklen achieves exactly that.

The summer 2010 collection is pretty awesome, I’m especially drawn to diaphanous layers that make a weird optical illusion, I feel a strong urge to grab those dinosaur shaped 3D glasses with red and blue lens and see how these would look through them… …the multicolored, layered garments are amazingly rich and serene at the same time, and I also enjoy Oskar’s unusual take on lace. I’ll bet that I would find bagfuls of wearable separates from Osklen, but I’m also afraid that these are priced like Moncler…
The current winter collection is worth a look, too. There is such an effortless take on draping jersey, that my eyes feel soothed after looking it through.

// Marimekko spring — I love it!
Posted on | November 25, 2009 | 8 Comments
For my delight our national pride in the field of fashion and design — Marimekko — seems to improve all the time. The great thing is that they employ young designers to freshen up both their print design and clothing lines. Right now I’m extremely happy about the following things.
Rinne & Niinikoski has designed some great clothing for next spring! See these beautifully constructed black and white numbers, can I has one?

Even the striped designs are quite fetching:

Samu-Jussi Koski does good job this spring especially with oversized jackets, t-shirts and knits — and adapting the classic “Unikko” print to very wearable chiffon dress:

Another thing is that — TADAA — Julia “Finsk” Lundsten has apparently designed some shoes for Marimekko. Judging from the images they seem to be slightly toned down in terms of height and shape from the most courageous Lundsten designs, but those sandals with ruffle detailing on front look interesting enough. Unfortunately I did not find a detail image of those, but here’s another pair for a taste:

For the first time I noticed to be interested in Marimekko bags, too. I mean their canvas bags are perfectly practical and well designed, you can definitely face a bunch of Finnish architects or designers sporting one — but they don’t actually create fashion waves…
This printed clutch would be a fabulous addition to many outfits:

Just cant pick the color…
All images from Marimekko, thanks for Claudia and Petra for making me aware of these good spring news!

// Jolier x-mas for me!
Posted on | November 10, 2009 | 5 Comments
I met young attractive and talented Finnish designer Sveta Planman briefly in Lumi Accessories Halloween party — oh, did I mention that she is very nice person, too! If you like classic feminine style you will find her Jolier collections definitely worth checking out — but Sveta is probably best known for her genious multiuse garment, Jolier One. That one has been on my to-purchase-some-day list for a while.
Practically we are speaking here a simple rectangular piece of cloth, with hook and loop tape attached to edges and supplied with a pair of suspenders. What, does not sound exiting?

Well, Jolier one is actually a wrap on a crack, that piece can be worn well over 50 different ways, these images from Jolier site illustrating just few possibilities. It does the job of a top, skirt, tunic or dress, apron, bag… …some of the ways are of course just slight variations on a theme (a dress with or without suspenders) but anyhow the possibilities of this garment make my imagination to run wild. You can get Jolier One in multitude of fabrics and there are seasonal additions to the selection, too. Seccoshop has even versions made of recycled materials — I recommend visiting on site if you happen to be in Helsinki. I really like this kind of design that extends over traditional fashion seasons — and breaks the conventional garment centered thinking.
I can imagine appreciating the multitude of possibilities of this piece a lot, especially when traveling — and for that reason I am about to make an exception from my usual fabric snobbery. The black heavy polyester jersey version is perfect for traveling, it does not wrinkle, does not gather dust, is machine washable, goes with everything and the stretch makes the different drapings behave. I really love how the hooks and loops add some lingerie-esque detail to simple, architectonic draped shapes. So yes, I have decided what I’m going to buy myself as a Christmas pressie (yes I always get one for myself, satisfaction guaranteed).
Id you have doubts how this piece works in so called real life, see Maria’s beautiful pictures of Jolier One in action.

// Gudrun og Gudrun
Posted on | November 10, 2009 | 5 Comments
Sometimes I feel that this blog is just succession of awkward transition to another. My knitting ramblings yesterday reminded me about Gudrun og Gudrun, I’ve been thinking about writing about them for a while…

Image from Gudrun og Gudrun.
Gudrun og Gudrun are two women from Faroe Islands — and they make pretty fabulous handknit wear, some organic jersey basics, even some shoes are included to their collection. There is quite artisanal feeling going on with their pieces — and yes, someone could refer to Rodarte here, too. But I’m not too sure if Rodarte can take the whole credit of large gauge knits, am I totally wrong with my feeling that there is a strong connection to punk aesthetics with those… …maybe even Vivienne Westwood herself has explored this kind of knits earlier?
Gudrun og Gudrun manage to differentiate themselves from Rodarte — and punk vibes. There is some simple, calm aesthetic going on in their knits. Mohair is paired to leather or tape yarn for strong contrasts and a wire makes the hem of light mohair dress to swing like almost weightless crinoline. The textures and patterns are simple and there is no shred at sight. And yes, there is even some *sic* fun fur yarn introduced in their collection =).

// Katie Gallagher
Posted on | November 8, 2009 | 2 Comments
Oh my god, I stumbled on a real gem on my last surfing spree. Katie Gallagher is young New York based designer. Her S/S 10 lookbook speaks me in volumes. It’s all black but the vibe is more space goth than rocker chic, no stud or shred in the sight. Side note: no, I’m not getting tired to those yet, shreds ans studs are classic for me, but the fashion world has perhaps slightly overdosed those lately.
The garments are constructed but still manage play with softness, the silhouettes vary from forced and restricted to flowy and soft. Judging from the images her legwear looks simply amazing. Every single piece of this collection looks like something I would gladly add to my wardrobe, they really connect to the darker side of my sense of aesthetics.

Few images from the earlier S/S 09 collection. Those leggings with zippers, wow, just wow. I love how they can be opened to form some weird fabric sculptures around the leg. The pale color palette also reveals some detail of the beautiful texture interplay in her designs.

I’m amazed. I really need to get my old lazy bones to NY.
