// Winter inspiration (wish it would be spring — but the reality bites)
Posted on | February 26, 2010 | 3 Comments

Some of you might have noticed that my winter everyday style has quite a lot masculine elements — and when I browsed my inspiration folder I noticed that many of the wintery images indeed are of men.
I also noticed that The Sartorialist still is my favorite street style blog. Scott is sometimes claimed being somewhat conservative — but personally I value the variety, his attention to subtle detail and his overall ambitious take on street photography. The Sartorialist is never a cavalcade of stereotypic hipsters wearing the IT-items of the season (occasional disease of Nordic street style blogs) and I can’t really blame it on focusing just beautiful people, there’s always something remarkable in the outfits and personal style.
I know that I have to widen my perspective to Asian street style… …I truly have a fascination to especially Japanese aesthetics and although I feel total alien to the culture (never been there, never actually known anyone from Japan) I think that I have been somewhat influenced subconsciously by the popular culture imagery. Any suggestions of great sites?
One thing I really value in The Sartorialist that Scott actually photographs all age groups. Maybe not in the actual demographic proportion — but all age groups are represented whatsoever. This image is one of my definite favorites of all winter outfits I’ve ever seen — and should be added to Wikipedia, key words aging gracefully.
All images from The Sartorialist. Thank you, Scott!

I know that your exploitation of my obsession for pyrocumulae had to be just a co-incidence, but I have to thank you (and yes, you got my attention but I was able to exercise my self control, thank you). After your nuclear blast prints, cloud prints and some photographic prints of not-necessarily-too-cute representatives from Earth fauna I’m looking at all photographic imagery from a new angle.
And that would be: how awesome would this look on a T-shirt?

Duststorm in Mars from Nasa archives, love the printer raster and those random digital additions.
A jellyfish smack from National Geographic.
Microscopic images — cyanobacteria from Nat’s aquarium.
Ice crystals from Rarara’s photoblog.
Nudibranch deep sea creature. These are practically snails without shells — and they come in more shapes and colors than regular Alexander McQueen collection. Photographer: Mark Poulton.
My attention started to wander with the crystals, so the perfect t-shirt shoots are still there…

// Count me in, count me out
Posted on | December 16, 2009 | No Comments

If I had not been in a flu during the busy pre-Christmas party time, this would have been the look I would have worn in a heartbeat. An easy but girly dress, colorful tights, a pair of awesomely weird Kron by Kronkron shoes, natural hair, s**tload of makeup, bright nails, no jewelry. Perfectly mismatchy and exactly me, except I’m still short of those shoes.
Image found via Susie Bubble from The Neverending Story. Be sure to see the whole awesome Kron photoshoot there!

// Holga rocks

My interest for obsolete camera technology has been limited to polaroid cameras, but when browsing through the great Finnish Holga enthusiast site Holgarocks it almost feels that I should widen my perspective.

// Julia Lundsten for Ports and
Basso & Brooke
Posted on | October 8, 2009 | 2 Comments
It is always delightful to see a fellow Finn to make it in the big world — and Julia “Finsk” Lundsten is definitely doing that. In addition to her own collection I spotted her shoes from two spring collections: Ports and Basso & Brooke. I found some detail images from nymag.com. Lundsten for Ports looks like completely new collection (note: I haven’t seen images from Finsk ss collection… …they might be from there) with chunky twisted strap detail and super architectural heels. There are also brogues from white stingray, stingray platform pumps and some flats from interesting materials. I like the cheerful combination of pale blue and red — but the palette has also black and white, matte gold and nude.

Julia Lundsten for Basso & Brooke looks like a mix from Finsk 09 seasons completed with the experimental “Project One” numbers (see Susie on that for more information) and maybe few previously unseen colorways of 09 models.

All images from nymag.com.
I really like how Julia injects color to her designs. I recently saw the famous ponyhair wedge IRL with its color blocked sister (last image). To be honest I was more drawn to that color version — the cuts and color blocks complete the lines of the design in very satisfying way.
Adding some Finsk flair to my wardrobe is definitely a part of my spring shopping plan. The wooden chunky heels are probably not made for breaking walking records, but they’ll do great job just showing it off…

// Revealing tiny pics
Posted on | September 27, 2009 | 2 Comments
I found this site extremely intriguing:
http://www.exactitudes.nl/ — just keep clicking those tiny pics!
Is my outfit actually an uniform? How much do I dress to belong? Does my stance reveal something?
A quote from the site to explain what it is all about:
Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek have worked together since October 1994. Inspired by a shared interest in the striking dress codes of various social groups, they have systematically documented numerous identities over the last 14 years. Rotterdam’s heterogeneous, multicultural street scene remains a major source of inspiration for Ari Versluis and Ellie Uyttenbroek, although since 1998 they have also worked in cities abroad.
They call their series Exactitudes: a contraction of exact and attitude. By registering their subjects in an identical framework, with similar poses and a strictly observed dress code, Versluis and Uyttenbroek provide an almost scientific, anthropological record of people’s attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity. The apparent contradiction between individuality and uniformity is, however, taken to such extremes in their arresting objective-looking photographic viewpoint and stylistic analysis that the artistic aspect clearly dominates the purely documentary element.

// The colors of my wardrobe
Posted on | September 26, 2009 | 2 Comments
This is a task I have been thinking doing for a while. I photographed the colors of my wardrobe, here are the swatches (black and white not included):

The non-colors: pure grey (in all levels), grey tinged with mauve, blackened purple (NOT wine), blackened brown, blackened olive, greyed pink, greyed purple, thunderstorm grey (grey with blue-purple undertones), dove, off-white, preferably with grey undertones, (cool) beige (not pictured).
Reds and purples: raspberry, neon pink, red purple, dusty mauve, dusty cool pale pink, antique red (not pictured).
Blues: bright cornflower, navy (not pictured), indigo (not pictured)
Greens: bright kelly green, mint, seafoam shades, sage
Yellows: chartreuse leaning more to yellow than to green, pale banana yellow, neon yellow
Browns: cool mud shades, rich chocolate (not pictured), cognac (in accessories, not pictured)
Nude
The challenge: photograph yours!

// More vintage sequins
Posted on | September 13, 2009 | 7 Comments
It feels that the sequins are all around right now. I gave up only for the cheap H&M black sequin leggings about month ago, they were a steal with their under 15 € price, and I really liked the look with black, small sequins over quite heavy viscose knit. They did not help too much, I’m still eyeing sequined tops and dresses all time. I think that I will go for a vintage piece instead of grabbing some high street items. The sequined-something is not actually a part of my fall wardrobe plan, but I have a small monthly allowance for second hand shopping…
There are several sequined styles I like especially. One of my ultimate favorite is the over-the-top sparkle combined to a casual shape. There are lots of great eighties pieces with reasonable prices fitting to this description perfectly.

The gold sequin tunic from Penelopepup’s vintage, the gold sequin maxi T from thelasthurrah, and the blue sequin sweater from Vintage Shouting.
Black sheer material with irregular shape and sequins would look awesome combined to distressed items. Just look at Punky with some shredded jean shorts and the sheer sequin top.

Another black one from Justkitch and black with pink sequins from PuttinOnTheThreads.
For some reason I like some kitchy sequin motifs:

I love the possibilities with the cropped harlequin top from Moonshine Vintage, it would be great layered over simple slip dresses and tunics, under chunky knits etc. Checkerboard dress from Santoki Vintage is awesome (her shop has several great items, definitely worth a visit). The eighties houndstooth pattern tunic is almost quiet in this company. From Blooming in Asphalt.
I don’t like too vintagey shapes in everyday dressing, but I probably could go even that far for a special occasion.

The incredible thirties dress is from Thirteen Bees. The sixties wool dress with lovely ruffled sleeves is from Dressedtosell. The beaded mini dress from persephonevintage would outshine any cocktail party (yeah, I just hang in cocktail parties all time…).
