// In the black jean rut
Posted on | May 28, 2011 | 6 Comments

The truth about my everyday work wear has been bit sad and monotonous lately. This spring has not been particularly warm and I have lived in my black or washed black Cheap Monday jeans. For work I like to add a shirt or t-shirt — and a jacket for some structure. This is all old stuff, ASOS shirt — which I have apparently snagged from the back. It is semi transparent, but not this much — I added the contrast to the images to get out more detail from this lovely Gestuz jacket — and for the mood… Hmm, the necklace I bought quite recently, it is from Lindex. I was about to go for the gold one, but the industrial charm of the shiny silver just looked so much better in person.
Oh, if someone wonders my sudden eagerness of wearing my hair open… …well I guess there are couple of reasons. First of all it starts to be in length that looks quite balanced on me. Second — I bought a GHD straightening iron a while ago — and it kind of lives to the hype. It is an extremely well made tool, warms in seconds, glides on hair and is hot enough to smooth the hair with one or two swipes. It takes under 10 minutes to straighten my baby fine hair — a huge improvement to the previous 20 – 25 minutes… …I certainly can do that couple of times in a week in spite of my low maintenance tendencies…

// Washed out again

These Cheap Monday jeans have inspired me a lot this spring. I have built lots and lots of chalky, almost colorless outfits around them for everyday wear. I think that I had jeans with almost exactly similar wash in eighties, maybe that is the reason for my warm feelings towards these.
The top is from Gina Tricot — this is a lovely piece, the cotton is super soft and has a beautiful two color weave, which gives the fabric nice depth up close. I really like the peasant blouse shape at summertime — and it does not feel too romantic with this dove gray color and simple material. The chunky knit organic cotton scarf is from Vietto — another relatively new staple in my wardrobe. You can get these from Vietto Etsy shop or Goodis at Helsinki. Shoes are Sixtyseven heels from last summer. They are very nice to walk, but I have to confess that my accident has left some very persistent fear for wearing heels… …a flash of pain memory still strikes so often that I often have to change to flats before I leave home. Not a huge problem… …my leopard print ponyskin flats look good with these jeans!
FYI — I haven’t been partying hard lately. I got an infection to my right eye — but I’m trying to compensate the lack of eye makeup by giving some extra attention to my hair and adding some color to the lips… …that does not help to the persistent dark circles around my eyes, though!

// Denim à la Alber

I’m liking this second round of Acne — Lanvin collaboration quite a lot… …any of those garments presented above would be warmly welcome to my wardrobe, especially that gorgeous top. There is that effortless and very chic draping so quintessential to Elbaz — and it’s working well with lightweight denim — plus those beautiful embellishments combined to simple, casual shapes. Unfortunately the prices are unreachable for me. Oh well. (< learning the vocabulary…)

This pair of Cheap Monday jeans I would love to add to my wardrobe. I really like the wash, plus the longer rise tends to fit me better…

// Basics, shreds
Posted on | November 1, 2009 | 4 Comments

I have to admit that on everyday basis I often go to the easy route: pick a pair of jeans and combine them with some basics. These DIY shredded ones have been in a heavy rotation after I made them — so it definitely wasn’t a mistake to destroy this second hand pair. If I have to tone them down I cover up the thighs with a dress and they give just some interesting texture for my legs. Here with an old taupe French Connection silk satin dress, H&M silk jersey cardigan (finally changed the ugly plastic buttons to horn ones), DIY silk kid-mohair scarf and old boots with rubber band detail. Nothing special, but texturally very pleasing combination.

I can’t really use these images in indivudual outfit post because it is totally impossible to get any detail of the top part. But I included them here to prove one curious point. Although I believed the opposite to happen, these jeans actually make my legs look really long. The two angles prove that it is just not a camera trick. And here we approach to one of my quite few dressing rules: never judge a piece on a hangar. If you are at least a bit curious — try it on. And if you are blind to your mirror image, just take a picture.

Cause I already discussed about some personal stuff today on my previous post, I thought that it might be a good time to introduce the blog cats. There might have been an occasional tail or paw incident in the outfit posts, but here are the tricksy little creatures at their own element, sleeping cuddly in a pile of blankets on our living room sofa. They actually don’t get along too well — but I have had some doubts that this is merely just a disguise to bluff us scant humans to fulfill some inexplicable law of universe (of course you knew already that some cats are from outer space, these two definitely fit to definition). One day I happened to come home rather unexpected time and found them two like that…

// Dressed in distressed

I’ve made some great second hand finds lately.
I know that I’m kind of late to jump to the frayed jeans wagon, but on the other hand at this age I have seen several of those passing by — so I trust that they are probably coming back. My love for frayed things goes to several levels… …there is always the aesthetic of destruction… …on the other hand I simply love the almost organic texture of all things torn and worn. But I really hesitated to rip any pair of my own beloved jeans — I don’t have too many pairs after all. So I have kept my eyes open in charity shops for a nice pair to end up as the victim of my scissors.
And this week I got lucky, I found these perfect straight legged pale gray jeans for 8 euros. I could not help myself, just destroyed them almost completely. The aim was to create a violently torn surface that still offers a decent amount of coverage — and I think that I succeeded. I also varied the state of destruction to get some shape for the leg.
This time I wanted to pair the newly torn jeans to things that contrast strongly; to something clean and sober. So I covered most of the damage with H&M heavy nude silk satin dress and threw the old Filippa-K blazer over (this slightly masculine and quite worn piece has been in heavy rotation lately). But the Docs kind of complete the worn denim look, so my upper and lower half are completely mismatched — in theory. Practically they make a pretty satisfyingly matching couple. No jewels, minimal makeup, pulled back hair.

// The mom jacket goes casual
Posted on | September 15, 2009 | 6 Comments
Ok, here’s the first round for the second hand jacket I found just a while ago. I really, really love the print and colors are great, too.
But let’s get honest. The jacket is sort of mom-jacket shape. I had an idea to alter it somehow, but I don’t want to do it in haste. So here I go with it, as it is. I decided rather work with the shape, this relaxed everyday outfit might be labeled as soccer-mom-on-acid –look, right…

I layered an old circle burnout T (Only, Vero Moda?) with thrifted, customized neon tank top, rolled up the jacket sleeves, pulled on some skintight dark denim and my old all white Chuck Taylors & added Vero Moda pom pom scarf. I really wish that I had one more layer to go with this, a slip with some lace on the hem. Anyhow, cheap, slightly trashy & comfortable.
I really don’t remember the origins of all my old T-shirts. I almost always remove the labels from them; the labels tend to turn to the right side on a thin fabric — and they itch.
Style blog… …mwhahahaa!

// This town ain’t big enough for both of us

I really like how this kitchy but lovely pair of boots transform a totally contemporary and simple outfit to very thematic, borderline costume like. The single component is a catalyst of strong interpretation — of course the jeans nod to the same direction but these days I guess that it is not the first association. I understand that many people try to avoid things like this happening. But I prefer my outfits to have some sort of background story or distinguishable feeling going on, don’t really care much if that’s stylish or not.
Jacket is from Annette Görtz and the possibility to unbutton it from unexpected places makes it an ideal partner to dishevelled items like my DIY frayed shirt. Worn over some H&M or Gina Tricot tunic, old Lee Norma jeans and those Bronx boots are old stuff likewise. Can’t really call them cowboy boots…
