// The print that made me fall

My second planned sales purchase was this pair of Topshop Unique pants. I kind of loved the whole Unique collection for this summer, but the steep prices kept my hairy little hands off from the pieces — and my credit card safe. However I was actively stalking especially these pants OR the blazer with similar print on the sale. Not both of them, I would definitely not use them as a suit!
Well, I was too slow for the blazer — but I got the pants. I had lots of doubts if the pants meet my expectations even with the sales price — but they do, more than do! I think they are gorgeous — heavyweight silk and the print is just dreamy. The cut is clever, too — slightly awkward cropped length, high waist with wide waistband and generously dropped crotch — the images in the Topshop site really did not give any idea about the details of the cut. The garment clings the legs beautifully when moving — a detail which is impossible to capture to still images. I like them even so much that I tried to hunt down the blazer as well (Michelle, thank you again, you are a doll!) — unfortunately with no luck!
With these pants it is definitely possible to create feminine, subtly flattering silhouettes — however I went for my favorite “loose on loose” look for these pics — not to mention it just feels right when the temperatures are high… The peachy nude giant shirt and the weird, tangly necklace thing are both from Weekday. I got the chain piece from Stockholm after Christmas, I believe it has not been here before. It is not actually a body chain, but a plain necklace with cascading chain loops, inflated to gigantic proportions. So it is definitely possible to wrap it around the body in multitude of ways. It is pain to keep it untangled… …solution is to let it just tangle and enjoy the haphazard results. That gorgeous Sou Brette necklace somehow encourages me layering it with other items — in spite of it being quite showy piece itself.

I know that in the near future I will be wearing jackets and blazers more than I have used to lately. But I probably can get away with less than formal ones… …maybe with that printed one from Topshop, soft and easy kimono style from Zara — or fabulously reduced NOM*D painted blazer from Amelie Boutique sale (thanks again, Kingdom of Style!).

I haven’t been sweeping the charity shops more than usual — good for me — but I have to say that embarrassingly high percentage of my life goes on by by browsing Etsy… Which is sort of good, because sometimes I bump into small treasures like this skirt — and on the other hand there is stuff in my faves for quite many posts to come…
The skirt is hand painted, from seventies and lovely, bouncy silk taffeta. I’m in awe about it’s gorgeousness! It’s in nearly perfect condition with only a small stain in the yoke — I tested water and cleanser to the seam and the colors seem to hold, although it is marked as dry clean only. Silk fabrics can be gently washed — but colors don’t always hold well and silk taffeta is prone to “water stains” — water and sometimes uneven drying leaves marks to it (dyed fabrics though are worse with this than white ones). I might end up hand washing it — and ironing when damp. It would also benefit from adding a zip on the side. It is a pull-on model and although the fit is perfect when the skirt is on the yoke is so small that I can barely pull my hip through it.
Could not resist trying it on with simple white t-shirt (uh, erm, I am affected by some mighty looks of this spring — but I have always liked low key tops with festive / flashy bottoms) — mine is considerably oversized Cheap Monday one. And the Topshop wedges.

So I converted an old leather jacket to this large clutch bag. I loved the heavy leather and striped construction — but unfortunately I did not get along well with the shape and size of the jacket. It cost me one euro — and the original thought was to reuse the fabric if the jacket was left unused.
I thought that this would be a simple little project — just cut the piece from the middle back of the jacket, sew on the metallic zipper and sides — add a long leather stripe to the zipper for easy pulling action… Well, the back piece was weirdly asymmetrical and it took four attempts before I got the pleats right — they give the clutch subtly softer shape and balance the asymmetry.
There’s also a confession to made. My clothes shopping ban has worked relatively well, I have purchased only few second hand things, couple of accessories and maybe couple of t-shirts so far this year. But when the bright jewel tones of this summer arrived I could not resist, I fell not just for this one jewel toned skirt from Zara… …something else bright and new in my wardrobe as well, back to that later. On the other hand I did not get the jeans I was after this spring, so be it.
Excuse my chicken legs… …I do use short skirts and shorts when temperatures rise, but now it is definitely too early. This time I was after my chartreuse tights for this photoshoot, but just could not find them. Shoes are from Topshop and stripy shirt from Weekday.

// Dancing the night away

I don’t know if other people than Finns arrange these pre-Christmas parties… …anyway — my calendar starts to be full. Personally I think that everyday dressing is so much more interesting than clothing for parties… …I’m doing it usually just by this old convenient formula: put on a dress and heels, funky tights optional. I don’t do sexy — just some sort of girly-quirky. Or dark and austere. But that’s about it.
Dress is old Karl Lagerfeld for H&M — and I love it to bits. It is 100% silk — it does not have actual lining but the opacity builds from the multiple crepe chiffon layers. The frocklike shape is bit playful — but it can be also worn with very classic accessories. Um… …mine are blindingly bright Topshop sale tights — and awesome Kron by Kron Kron shoes from Iceland — I believe they haven’t been here yet although they are not new. There is bit of everything in them — that somehow makes them quite easy to combine. Their broque-like details match them nicely to this wannabe-frock dress…
Truth about me and dancing — I don’t do it…

Yep, I cropped the darn Acne dress. And cut the neck opening to better shape — actually like the dress lot more now when all the edges are raw. Now it is below the knee length and agreeing so much better with the rest of my wardrobe. I’m layering it with gigantic Weekday shirts (the beige mesh one, and nude square T), leggings (this pair H&M) and my own knits (the gray cape and see-thru mohair one). Comfy! But they predict snow next week… …guess I have to start to cover my legs…

I’m piling on some giant t:s and knits, pretending that there is no need for a coat yet. I know that I have to give up soon. But while waiting that happen…
Gray tank AA, yellow one and the giant t from Weekday, DIY cashmere knit thingy, ancient H&M silk skirt, a pair of nameless mohair mix socks and Topshop wedges. I did not catcht the flu.

// Uncolored…
Posted on | August 25, 2010 | 3 Comments

I photographed this outfit in low light, thus the grainy images. I have worn lots of grey, lately. All grey outfits, tonal greys, greys combined to greiges… …yeah, kind of boring but also somehow weirdly fitting for a woman with road dust colored hair and wolf eyes.
This inexpensive little second hand mesh thing has found its way to surprisingly many of my outfits. This time I’m wearing it the wrap piece front under my all time favorite H&M cardigan. American Apparel tank is doing shoddy job underneath protecting my modesty — but fortunately I’m not too shy to show a glimpse of the neon purple Monki bra now and then — especially when the outfit is not revealing by any other means. Jeans are Cheap Monday — and Topshop shoes I bought nearly unused from a girl who could not walk in them. Good for me, these are excellent addition to my everyday shoes! The heel height is actually very moderate (maybe 9 cm) — but definitely too much for totally inexperienced user.
I haven’t been thinking autumn too much yet. August is one of my favorite months, the nights start to be decently dark and noticeably cooler, days can still be warm, but there also are days for light layers like this. I have been buying quite a lot of clothes this summer, even the sales were favorable for me although I did not scour them systematically. I’m definitely not having regrets, all pieces are great and will definitely go in circulation. But now I really have to face the fact that my wardrobe has it’s limits… …I have to start to consider my purchases more carefully — and honestly I don’t have much needs for the winter. I would love to find a sculptural cape coat — and always could add a pair of new boots — but I can definitely do without. Should I stop high street shopping altogether? That would probably be good option to consider…

// Mandatory cutoffs
Posted on | July 11, 2010 | 4 Comments

I don’t really like shorts — but do appreciate their practicality in this weather. I think I have four pairs, old Diesel striped and pouched ones, two pairs of denim cutoffs and one slightly safari inspired and more formal H&M pair I got earlier this spring. The cutoffs I have bought ready made — which is more than lame, really. Why — well, I like my jeans close fitting at the top — but my cutoffs as loose as it is humanly possible without them actually falling off, so I have no use of my old jeans as a cutoff material. And I hate trying on second hand jeans. So that’s the excuse… …but I definitely don’t go for branded denim with these. Actually I’m not sure if these are from H&M or Lindex — or even some supermarket — I have removed the itchy tag attached inside the waist band.
A long sleeved shirt is often accompanying my shorts when I have to make it to the town. This cotton voile one is By Malene Birger, sunglasses Ray Ban and shoes Topshop.

If I had to stick just to one style I would probably vaguely vary the Mad Max futuristic-utilitarian-comfortable-dirty-faded-dusty looks for the rest of my life. Probably not because it is my absolutely favorite way to dress up (it is not) — but because it is somehow in harmony with my looks — heavy build, scars, pale wolf eyes, road dust colored hair.
This looks actually quite costume like although the separate pieces are simple enough — I wore it still. A familiar All Saints jersey dress over Weekday mesh tunic, Pedro Garcia sandals (initially I was pulling the Westwood boots on, they would go so well, too) and Topshop wristlets. For some reason I have stored these sandals as special occassion shoes — and have worn them maybe once or twice before. Don’t know why, they are very nice to walk in and blend in to many outfits. The thin straps limits the use a bit — but they can definitely be worn for short visits downtown. I love the contrast between almost unnoticeable straps and chunky sole. Something new in this outfit… …when I saw these weird jersey wristlets in Topshop online boutique I just had to have them. And yes, one might think that I have hurt my wrists — but still they please my eye so very much that I don’t really care. I would like to add some legwear, but it is too warm for that.
