// Random encounters to high fashion

Living in periferic European country, earning a modest income I feel that high fashion is quite distant thing for me. We got our Louis Vuitton store here in Helsinki recently, Kenzo and Mulberry have their stores and some designer pieces are sold in random small boutiques.
But I clearly remember the details of my first IRL encounter to high fashion, although I’ve lost the exact context almost entirely. It had to be in the beginning of the millennium, say between 2001 or 2003 It was my first trip to either London or Paris and I had decided to go and actually see designer clothes in person, to touch them, experience them. I thought that a large department store might be the right environment for the first timer (not too much active sales clerks hassling around) so the place could have been Galeries Lafayette or if in London, probably Selfridges.
But what I haven’t forgotten is that first item I touched and looked through was John Galliano dress. It was made from fine cotton and all the ruffling of the featherlight material was so heavy… …I had never seen anything like it before.
I did not try anything on.
I have tried to find the dress from Style.com — several times — but I guess that Gallianos shows are pretty far from what actually materializes into commercial form under his label.
One of my all time favorite fashions shows happens to be his. It’s just not the brilliantly bold model cast, but also the cabaret & circus aesthetics that never leaves me cold. See the images on Style.com.
